Training and Professional Development Opportunities
New Session: Advanced Court Interpreter Training
Our next online instructor-led session of the Advanced Court Interpreter Training (ACIT) program will begin on May 9 and will run for a month (10 classes) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.
As many of you might already know, the ACIT program is designed to help you advance your court interpreting skills and expand your legal vocabulary base. It serves as proof of specialized training in legal or court interpretation and is a great preparation tool for the components frequently featured in court interpreter accreditation exams.
As more and more customers are requesting service via video calls or conference calls, interpreters are required to get themselves acquainted with tools and features of remote interpretation. If you need help on using video platforms like Zoom or Teams, we have some resources for you. Click here to access.
Free Training: Working with Human Trafficking and Sexual Violence Survivors
In this training, you will learn about interpreting in settings that involve victims and survivors of human trafficking and sexual violence, including managing common situations you may be confronted with, acting professionally in the various contexts you may be called upon to interpret, and to successfully deal with challenges and dilemmas that you might come across. We also have plenty of resources related to this for your edification and future reference. Click here to access the training.
Continued Competence for Translators: Introduction to Advertising Translation
This is a professional development course designed to provide freelance translators with the opportunity to look at the field of advertising translation, its key components, text types and techniques as well as the function of translation of advertising and promotional texts.
Continued Competence for Interpreters: Cardiovascular Disease Training for Language Professionals
This online training aims to assist interpreters in enhancing their skills, expanding knowledge base, and consolidating their vocabulary base within the context of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the main causes of disability and premature death not only in North America but all over the world. Particularly in the context of the ongoing pandemic, it is important now more than ever for language professionals to equip themselves with knowledge about this and be prepared to assist the afflicted.
If you wish to take a language proficiency test to get your linguistic and interpretation skills in English and another language evaluated, you might want to take the Interpreter Language & Skills Assessment Tool (ILSAT), which you can book through MCIS. Approved by the Ministry of Citizenship & Immigration, this is a formal language test for interested candidates to acquire professional certification as a community interpreter in various social service sectors.
