When do I need a notarized or certified translation?

Certified translations are translations provided by translators who are certified by the Canadian Translators Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) and are members in good standing of a provincial translators’ association (e.g. ATIO, OTTIAQ, STIBC etc.).  

Notarized translations are an alternative way of producing an “official” translation. They are completed by translators who are either certified or have equivalent qualifications. They are accompanied by a Declaration signed by the translator and witnessed by a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits. Many organizations accept these as “official” translations. Some organization, only accept certified translations as “official translations”.
